Mary Anne Rawson's The Bow in the Cloud (1834): A Digital Edition and Network Analysis

West Indies

The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 outlawed slavery in the British West Indies (which roughly corresponds with what we now call 'the Caribbean', including the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Lucayan Archipelago). As a result several poems in The Bow in the Cloud address the horrors of West Indian Slavery. Nevertheless, despite the achievement, anti-slavery campaigners continued to agitate over indentured labour practices in the region, as this 2020 blog post by Michael Mahoney from the British National Archives shows.
